Advertisement: A lie designed to make you want to buy a product

Al Lewis says:

...related to the conversation we had about commercials and lies. When in Costa Rica, the children were confronted with commercial and cable TV. At home, they lead a sheltered life of PBS and closely controlled video tapes / DVDs. Given the ubiquitious nature of TV's in the average Costa Rican home, it was difficult to avoid. I didn't try to fight it too much because they were at least watching things in Spanish. The problem was dealing with the commercials. Of course, they took keen interest the commercials and started to express their desire for the things they were seeing. I remembered our conversation and told the kids that most all commercials were lies. They asked why they would lie on TV and I told them that the people who made commercials were more interested in getting you to buy something and getting your money than they were worried about your happiness. We made it a game to find the lies (in Spanish, no less) behind the commercials. If you drank that, would you really start flying through the air? If you wore those cloths, do you really think people would like you more? Do you think that toy can do what they show? I was amazed at the clarity with which children can pick out the falsehoods once they have been given the option to NOT believe everything that is shown or implied. I'm raising skeptics.
